Aurora Robson
Aurora Robson is a multimedia artist based in New York’s Hudson River Valley. She repurposes debris into art, most often intercepting plastic before it flows into our oceans. One of Aurora’s sculptures is composed of 15,000 bottles gathered from the streets of New York City; another piece, made from 9,000 bottles, lights up and rotates with the help of solar power.
“Plastic is causing a global nightmare, and art is a global language, so for the past decade I’ve been exploring this material as a medium,” Aurora says. To address the plastic waste stream problem further, she founded Project Vortex, an international collective of artists, designers, and architects working to shift cultural perceptions of plastic and to restrict its presence in nature. She has also designed a creative stewardship course for colleges that want to increase their environmental impact.
Aurora’s art has been featured in Sculpture Magazine, Art in America, WIRED, Art & Antiques, and on the cover of Green Building + Design. She is a recipient of the Pollock Krasner Grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in sculpture, and a TED/Lincoln Re-Imagine Prize.
